This poem is attributed to The Scotsman, an Edinburgh newspaper. A young girl asks her father what a Tory is: and he offers a satirical, witty reply. There are several references to contemporary issues: for instance, Tories delight ‘in pensions and jobs that are shabby’, while they ‘eat holes in our good Constitution’. Their hair also stands up when you mention ‘the Bill of Reform’. The poem is followed by an ‘Epigram Extraordinary’ where the Tories, and their desire to deceive the public, are also the subject.
