In this election poem, the speaker lends its support to the Tory John Learmonth, who co-funded the Dean Bridge project. The speaker of the poem is relieved that the 'old burgh system', which worked well for the Tories in Edinburgh, has now been removed. Following the passing of the Reform Bill, which most Tories opposed, many asserted their support for the new bill, in the hope that they could attract the votes of pro-reformers - the poem may well be an example of this pheonomenon.
