David Carnegie was a factory worker in Arbroath, who published in the local and Dundee press, often under the pseudonym 'A Son of St Tammas'. This poem was included in his collection Lays and Lyrics from the Factory (Arbroath: Thomas Buncle, 1879). It remembers an ardent local Chartist and Reformer. It may have been written around 1867, since it reflects on the new rights that 'William' did not live to see.
