This poem appears in a volume dedicated to Joseph Callan B.D., O.B.E. with whom the poet (W.A. Mursell) was in France during the First World War. The poem emphasises the contribution made by mothers during the war, particularly their loss of sons. Such sacrifice was an important causal factor in the enfranchisement of older women in 1918. Mursell was a prominent Baptist minister.
