In this poem, the speaker comments on the crowded conditions in St Andrew's Hall, Glasgow, on a Friday night. Another figure in the audience turns to the speaker and says that the easiest way to get out is to 'Cheer for Gladstone' - perhaps suggesting that this was a regular occurence (and annoyance) during the Reform agiation or that the audience members were primarily Tories.
