A note is included with this poem: 'Glasgow, Jan. 1833', presumably where and when the poem was written. The poem urges readers to continue to fight for liberty and 'for your native land'. Although franchise reform is not directly referenced, this poem most likely reflects the widespread feeling amongst reformists that the Reform Bill of 1832 was merely a stepping stone, and that a new campaign for liberty was now needed.
