This poem of five stanzas may refer to the Paisley election of 1891, necessitated by the death of the incumbent MP, W.B. Barbour, and won by the Liberal, William Dunn. However, it also illustrates another more general dynamic in the political verse of the times - Home Rule. On this occassion Home Rule is not linked to any national cause but to a religious ethos underpinning political principles, 'righteousness', 'Gospel light'.
