This poem is dated 'Paisley, 18 June, 1832', i.e. before the passing of the Reform Act. William Wilson of Crummock (d.1836) was a long-standing supporter of reform. In Wilson's memoir, William Wilson of Crummock (ed. James Dobie, 1846), we are told that Wilson was 'an advocate for safe and gradual reform' (pp. 157-8).
