In April 1867 the Paisley Herald published a number of articles about the Paisley Liberal Association, attributing ass-like characteristics to its members. See also 6 April 1867 and 13 April 1867. Here, in this poem, fictional contestants vie for the status of the Ass-ociation's poet laureatship: namely, 'Old Boy', 'Culture', 'Onlooker', and 'Ineligible' (alias the 'Rhyming Donkey'). The donkey wins. Reference is made to the Reform Bill by the 'chairman' in his concluding remarks.
