This poem of eight (eight-line) verses marks the death of (Edinburgh-born) Lord Brougham who was prominent in the cause of Reform in the early years of the nineteenth century, famously opposing the slave trade and acting as counsel for Queen Caroline in 1820. Accompanying John Macgregor's poem was a note to the press indicating that 'he had the pleasure of dining with Lord Brougham nearly 50 years ago'. The only criticism levelled against Brougham was his attitude towards Mazzini.
